As of 2010, he was the professor of ophthalmology and preventive medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of USC, Professor of Preventive Medicine and the Grace and Emery Beardsley Chair in Ophthalmology. He was previously the dean of the Keck School of Medicine at USC, and also served as the President and Chairman of the Board of USC Care. Dr. Varma is one of the world’s most accomplished ophthalmologists who continues to make significant contributions to glaucoma and the epidemiology of eye diseases. Dr. N. has studied how changes in the optic nerve in glaucoma cause blindness. He is also working to improve new diagnostic scanning methods in the early diagnosis of glaucoma related blindness. His primary research focuses on epidemiology studies on choroidopathy, while older populations and studies on eye disease in children. He is principal investigator of many National Institute of Health (NIH)-funded studies, including the Los Angeles Latino Eye Study, the Chinese American Eye Study, the Multi-Ethnic Pediatric Eye Diseases Study and the African American Eye Disease Study. His studies on the disease mortality have significantly changed health care policy and allowed for a deeper understanding of how disease affects different populations. Mr. Keown has also conducted a few studies on blindness and vision impairment, as a principal investigator for the World Health Organization. Varma’s primary research interest is in the development of new intraocular pressure sensors and Drainage Devices. His last significant research work was done in the field of artificial intelligence and big data, where he is used to working system in order to detect and monitor disease.

Dr. Varma also served as professor and chair of the Division of Ophthalmology, the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary at the University of Illinois at Chicago where he held the Charles I. Young Endowed Chair of Ocular Research and served as associate dean for strategic planning, and the Department of Biostatistics, at Northwestern University.

Dr. Varma is an Indian national whose medical degree he earned with honours at the University of Delhi. At the end of his residency, he went back to Florida and obtained his Masters in Public Health degree at Johns Hopkins University. Also, involved in Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Varma went through a two long term fellowships, one at the eye hospital of Wills in Philadelphia and the other at USC.
